There have been several acquisitions in the TMT space this year, SumTotal picking up GeoLearning as one of the more notable. Not so much because of the increase in SumTotal’s footprint in the Learning space. It was significant because it eliminated SuccessFactors’ ability to deliver GeoLearning through a strategic partnership. As a small step toward filling that hole, SuccessFactors acquires Jambok, a social learning content play. It will be interesting to see if they close the rest of the gap.
Yesterday Peopleclick/Authoria announced the acquisition of Aquire Solutions Inc. This acquisition is also noteworthy but for a different reason. It is not a direct attack on a competitor strategy, but it is another indication that the Workforce Planning space will be gobbled up by the TM suite solutions. Will this be the tipping point for Taleo to make a move on Aruspex? How long will companies like Vemo and OrgPlus (Human Concepts) remain stand alone? And let’s not forget about the latest entrant OrcaEyes.
I actually think there is a case to be made for Workforce Planning to remain independent. Even though there has been movement on the buyer side of the equation toward a single vendor solution for a Talent Management Suite, many large companies are far from being ready for it. Similarly, the solution providers have a long way to go before we see a single platform with enough depth in each category to satisfy a complex global Fortune 100 company. Workforce Planning and analytics products will always need to be able to tap data from multiple systems. On top of all that – there is so much variance between companies in terms of their workforce planning business requirements and levels of maturity. Many companies still trying to define Workforce Planning and develop some basic capability.
But what do I know, I am just a blogging observer! The only thing we can do is watch the market forces and see who guesses right.
